Segment Titles & Descriptions

Follow

Segment Title Guidelines:

The following general guidelines apply to all segment titles:

  • Do not use ALL CAPS for any segment titles
  • Do use Title Caps for all segments titles
  • Do not end segment titles with a period
  • Do not include chapter/clip numbers in the segment titles

Segment Description Guidelines:

The following general guidelines apply to all segment descriptions:

  • Segment descriptions should be 1-3 sentences long
  • Use complete sentences in the segment description text
  • Use single spaces after all punctuations
  • Use present tense when talking about what's going on in the video
  • Past tense may be appropriate for describing historical events

Searchability:

All of the segments in our video platform are independently searchable and viewable. Therefore, segment titles and descriptions must be able to stand on their own. For example, instead of naming a segment “The Early Years”, it should include information about who or what the segment is about: “Abraham Lincoln: The Early Years”.

Segment Identification & Length:

The following guidelines apply to the identification of a segment’s start and end time.

  • In general, the content should determine the length of each segment
  • On average, segments should be between
  • 4 to 6 minutes for K12 content (titles that go to Learn360 and CVOD only)
  • 6 to 8 minutes for Higher Ed and Public Library content (titles for FOD and AVOD)
  • Do not include any introductory logo or animation in the first segment

Some common exceptions exist, including pre-chaptered videos and plays/performances.

Pre-Chaptered Videos:

If a video contains clearly marked "chapters" or sections (typically indicated by a title screen or slate in the video itself) please align the segments directly with these built-in markers. If a chapter is longer than our target time, that's ok as these titles have usually been through an instructional design process and the material has been divided that way for a reason.

If a title includes any type of credit information at the end of the video, can you please create a "Program Credits" segment? We have had some requests from customers who want easy access to this information when it's available in the video itself. I don't want to include it in the final content segment, but would like to have a separate "Program Credits" segment.

Some of the videos in our collection do not include credits at the end of the video so these would not have a "Program Credits" segment.

Plays and Performances:

Performance-based plays and videos should include the name of the play in every segment title.

For example: Cyrano de Bergerac: Christian Meets Cyrano
